Embrace diversity and create a collaborative office culture in order to help women break through the male-dominated glass ceiling of leadership roles in Real Estate, says a leader at one of the country\u2019s top female-owned agencies.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we started this company, there was a definite \u2018good old boys club\u2019 mentality in Real Estate,\u201d says Kelli Brennan, vice president of Coldwell Banker Properties Unlimited<\/a>, an international award-winning agency founded and expanded by three generations of women.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome thought that women had their uses as a secretary or assistant who could help men promote their career. We shook up the system when we started our female-owned brokerage. To say we caused an uproar in the market is an understatement,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Brennan says surveys show women face a glass ceiling in leadership roles in Real Estate. More than 60 percent of working adults believe working for a company that has female representation at the executive level is important, and 41 percent agree women must work harder than men to earn an executive-level position. Women also have 91 percent control in the home buying decision, and leadership<\/a> needs to reflect this change, she says.<\/p>\n

Use the following tips to break this cycle, according to Brennan:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Embrace diversity.<\/strong> Look for a range of talented men and women who can work with each other in various roles. The idea is not to exclude men but to create a supportive culture that is conducive to collaboration between men and women on an equal playing field.<\/p>\n

  1. Mentor qualified females.<\/strong> Mentorship is the best way to help women see that leadership is attainable. Give them the practical skills to lead them in the best direction.<\/li>\n
  2. Favor a collaborative office culture.<\/strong> Lift women up and support their successes in business. Support their careers and make them number one in their professional lives.<\/li>\n
  3. Work for a female-owned and operated business.<\/strong> Women can make a significant difference in the career advancement of other women, so it is advantageous for women to own a company or work with female mentors.<\/li>\n
  4. Understand the complexity of a woman\u2019s schedule.<\/strong> Often women are the primary caretakers of their household outside of work. Flexibility in working with a woman\u2019s schedule will support growth and retention.<\/li>\n
  5. Encourage women to say \u201cyes\u201d to opportunity.<\/strong> Women may feel inadequate to fill an upper-level position or a challenging task but if they don\u2019t take on new challenges, they cannot grow and reach new levels of advancement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
