{"id":4725,"date":"2023-10-02T14:54:01","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T14:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/02\/redfin-breaks-with-nar-in-wake-of-sexual-harassment-allegations\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:53:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:53:06","slug":"redfin-breaks-with-nar-in-wake-of-sexual-harassment-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/02\/redfin-breaks-with-nar-in-wake-of-sexual-harassment-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cEnough is enough.\u201d Redfin leaves NAR in wake of sexual harassment allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/tag\/redfin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Redfin<\/a><\/strong> will soon be requiring agents to cancel their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/tag\/national-association-of-realtors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Association of Realtors<\/a><\/strong> membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/redfin-is-leaving-nar\/\">letter<\/a> published on Redfin\u2019s website on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/tag\/glenn-kelman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glenn Kelman<\/a> and Redfin\u2019s leadership team, including Anna Stevens, Anthony Kappus, Bridget Frey, Chris Nielsen, Christian Taubman,&nbsp;Jason Aleem, and Keith Broxterman, said that Redfin is moving to end its support of NAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After what the firm described as \u201ccareful deliberation,\u201d Redfin will begin \u201crequiring our brokers and agents to leave NAR everywhere we can. Most brokerages are only a loose affiliation of independent agents, and none of us wants to impose a policy that could alienate any of the people who generate our revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter listed two main reasons for the brokerage\u2019s decision: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/re-max-settles-buyer-broker-commission-lawsuits-for-55-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAR policies requiring a fee<\/a> for the buyer\u2019s agent on every listing\u201d and \u201ca pattern of <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/nar-ignores-sexual-harassment-instills-culture-of-fear-dozens-of-women-tell-nyt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleged sexual harassment.<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since joining NAR in 2017, Redfin said that it has paid \u201cmore than $13 million in dues, in an effort to influence NAR to advocate for an open, technology-driven marketplace that would benefit consumers.\u201d In leaving NAR, the brokerage said it will explore other ways to achieve those goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter also stated that the allegations of sexual harassment at NAR further increase the discomfort Redfin executives felt about NAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redfin had already resigned from its national board seat at NAR in June, prior to the sexual harassment allegations came to light. The brokerage said it made this move due to the fact that NAR policies blocks sellers from listing homes that don\u2019t pay a commission to the buyer\u2019s agent, and it blocks websites like Redfin.com from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/outdated-mls-policy-hides-thousands-of-homes-for-sale\/\">showing for-sale-by-owner listings alongside agent-listed homes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemoving these blocks would be easy, and it would make our industry more consumer-friendly and competitive,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kelman and other Redfin executives wrote that the all-or-nothing approach Redfin is having to take with Realtor association membership has been forced on the firm by NAR&#8217;s rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNAR rules require us to leave local and state associations even when our only beef is with the national association,\u201d the letter states. \u201cThe rules require that for a broker to be a member, she must pay dues for each of the agents under her supervision, regardless of whether an agent wants to be a member. The rules further say that if a broker isn\u2019t a member, no agent under her supervision can be a member.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this decision, Redfin said that in roughly half of the U.S., including major markets like Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Long Island, Minneapolis, Nashville, Phoenix and Salt Lake City, Redfin agents will not be able to leave NAR, as NAR membership is required for agents to access listing databases, lockboxes, and industry-standard contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to this, Redfin asked that NAR \u201cdecouple local access to these tools, including the listing databases known as <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/tag\/mls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multiple Listing Services<\/a>, from support for the national lobbying organization. Agents shouldn\u2019t have to underwrite policies and legal efforts that hurt consumers when most of us got into real estate to help consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Redfin executives states that the firm will continue to support the MLSs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe love our industry. We\u2019ve tried to love NAR.
