{"id":4702,"date":"2023-09-18T21:12:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T21:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/18\/protesters-at-nars-chicago-headquarters-demand-major-reforms\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:52:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:52:58","slug":"protesters-at-nars-chicago-headquarters-demand-major-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/18\/protesters-at-nars-chicago-headquarters-demand-major-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters at NAR\u2019s Chicago headquarters demand major reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agentsdemandchange.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAR Accountability Project<\/a> is determined to not let the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/tag\/national-association-of-realtors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Association of Realtors<\/a><\/strong> off the hook for what they have called the trade group\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jasonshaber_i-wanted-to-answer-a-question-that-lots-of-activity-7108202134260633600-w8NQ?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indifference<\/a>\u201d to the <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/lawyer-letter-details-nars-internal-harassment-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual harassment allegations<\/a> brought forth in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/26\/realestate\/national-association-of-realtors-sexual-harassment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times<\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/nar-ignores-sexual-harassment-instills-culture-of-fear-dozens-of-women-tell-nyt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expos\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday afternoon, as part of the group\u2019s \u201cNational Day of Action,\u201d NAR Accountability Project leaders and local officials protested in front of NAR\u2019s Chicago headquarters just ahead of a NAR board of director\u2019s meeting. During the protest, the group held a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jasonhaber\/status\/1703832016813199723?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press conference<\/a>, in which the group\u2019s founder, Jason Haber, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compass.com\/agents\/jason-haber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Compass<\/strong>&nbsp;agent<\/a>&nbsp;from Manhattan, called for drastic change at the trade organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time for silencing women is over. Make the changes now, there is no reason to wait,\u201d Haber said. \u201cThey have a meeting at 2:30 today in this building and they could enact these changes and by five o\u2019clock it would be a different organization, if they have the will to do the right thing and that is why we are calling on them to act and to act now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to urging NAR to act, Haber also highlighted that his group had successfully campaigned for NAR to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jasonshaber_our-volunteers-have-been-working-since-early-activity-7109578483961356288-CUkU?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lose its \u201cGreat Place to Work\u201d designation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illinois State representative for the 14<sup>th<\/sup> District <a href=\"https:\/\/www.repcassidy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kelly Cassidy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/womenemployed.org\/we-experts\/sharmili-majmudar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sharmili Marjmudar<\/a>, the executive vice president of policy program and research at <strong>Women Employed<\/strong>, joined Haber at the press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassidy called for NAR to end its use of non-disclosure agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am here today to demand the end of the abusive use of non-disclosure agreements, which serve to silence victims and insulate abusers and have been a much used tool by this organization,\u201d Cassidy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Monday following the Times expos\u00e9, Haber started a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/demand-the-immediate-resignation-of-kenny-parcell-president-of-n-a-r?recruiter=272086&amp;recruited_by_id=e2f751a0-b3c0-11e5-a43d-0bb7ceae8c18&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_campaign=petition_dashboard&amp;utm_medium=copylink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Change.org petition<\/a>&nbsp;calling for former NAR president <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/nars-kenny-parcell-resigns-after-sexual-harassment-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenny Parcell\u2019s dismissal<\/a>. (Parcell resigned from his position Monday evening.) By Wednesday, this effort had morphed into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realestatenews.com\/2023\/08\/28\/agent-launches-campaign-calling-for-nar-presidents-resignation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAR Accountability Project<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week after the Times\u2019 story ran, Haber created another petition calling for the resignation <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/nar-throws-support-behind-ceo-bob-goldberg-at-emergency-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bob Goldberg<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/podcast\/the-lawsuit-episode-the-nar-expose-mortgage-lawsuits-and-a-cfpb-kickback-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAR executives<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jasonshaber_i-wanted-to-answer-a-question-that-lots-of-activity-7108202134260633600-w8NQ?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn post<\/a>, Haber wrote: \u201cThe original posts on Twitter\/X and the online petition calling for his resignation were as far as I was prepared to take this. 48 hours after we started the petition, Mr.Parcell resigned. I could have stopped there. But once I heard directly from victims, I knew there was more work to be done. Mr. Parcell wasn&#8217;t the disease at NAR, he was a symptom of a toxic culture. That culture, the one that allowed sexual harassment to flourish, needed to change,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the resignation or dismissal of Goldberg and others, the plan calls for all former employees and independent contractors to be released from non-trade secret NDAs, for NAR to retain an independent law firm to conduct \u201ca sweeping and comprehensive internal investigation,\u201d and for NAR to implement a third party HR reporting system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jasonshaber_everyone-asks-me-why-is-the-4-point-plan-activity-7108807673302634496-h-yh?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn post<\/a> from Haber, the four-point plan is \u201cdesigned to build NAR up, restore the faith of its staff, and to return back accountability to the organization. None were crafted to hurt NAR, to tear it down or diminish it in anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn fact, our reform package does the opposite, and will put NAR on the path to great success.&nbsp;What happens at NAR has a ripple effect across our entire industry. This is not simply a NAR issue, it&#8217;s a reckoning for our industry. This is why so many are engaging with us,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haber wrote that the ideas for the four-point plan came from over 1000+ industry professionals.
