{"id":4109,"date":"2023-03-16T16:46:05","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T16:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/16\/coldwell-banker-to-pay-30k-to-settle-housing-discrimination-claims\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:49:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:49:58","slug":"coldwell-banker-to-pay-30k-to-settle-housing-discrimination-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/16\/coldwell-banker-to-pay-30k-to-settle-housing-discrimination-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Coldwell Banker to pay $30K to settle housing discrimination claims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Real estate brokerage <strong>Coldwell Banker Realty<\/strong> has agreed to pay a $30,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2023\/attorney-general-james-stops-discriminatory-practices-long-island-real-estate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settlement<\/a> related to allegations of discrimination\u00a0by the brokerage against Black, Hispanic, and other homebuyers of color on Long Island, according to an announcement issued on Wednesday by New York Attorney General Letitia James. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/tag\/coldwell-banker-real-estate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coldwell Banker<\/a> will pay $20,000 in penalties and $10,000 to Suffolk County, which will go toward promoting the enforcement of and compliance with fair housing laws. The brokerage also agreed to provide fair housing training to its agents and will include a discrimination complaint form on its website as part of the settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind in New York state,&#8221; James said in a statement. &#8220;My office\u2019s investigation into Coldwell Banker uncovered a persistent pattern of prospective homebuyers receiving different treatment because of their race.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York Attorney General&#8217;s office began investigating the company\u2019s practices following a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.newsday.com\/long-island\/real-estate-agents-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Newsday <\/strong>investigation<\/a> into allegations of housing discrimination by Coldwell Banker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation by the AG&#8217;s office probed into the practices by five New York-based Coldwell Banker agents who allegedly engaged in misconduct, which included \u201cwarning\u201d white potential homebuyers about the racial demographics of certain neighborhoods, but did not do the same for Black or Hispanic homebuyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agents \u201cmay have subjected prospective homebuyers of color to different requirements than white homebuyers, directed homebuyers of color to homes in neighborhoods where residents predominantly belonged to communities of color and otherwise engaged in biased behavior,&#8221; James&#8217; office said in the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One incident highlighted by the New York AG&#8217;s office included two homebuyers \u2014 one white and one Black \u2014 who asked an agent to show them homes near Garden City. According to the AG&#8217;s office, the agent showed listings to the white homebuyer in neighborhoods that were 83% white. Conversely, the agent showed the Black homebuyer properties in Freeport, a neighborhood that is more racially diverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another documented incident included an agent telling a white potential homebuyer that \u201cyou don\u2019t really know in certain areas what you\u2019re going to get next door\u201d when speaking about a more diverse neighborhood, according to the AG&#8217;s office. However, the agent did not convey the same criticism with a Black potential homebuyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the first New York-based brokerage to come under fire with the AG&#8217;s office recently. Late last year, Attorney General James and Governor Kathy Hochul\u00a0announced that <strong>Keller Williams Greater Nassau, Keller Williams Realty Elite <\/strong>and<strong> Laffey Real Estate<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2022\/attorney-general-james-and-governor-hochul-tackle-discriminatory-practices-long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed to pay settlements<\/a> related to allegations of discriminatory practices in violation of state and federal fair housing laws.
