{"id":3490,"date":"2022-09-14T13:34:52","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T13:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/14\/larry-kendalls-3-step-process-to-develop-a-compelling-vision\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:46:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:46:48","slug":"larry-kendalls-3-step-process-to-develop-a-compelling-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/14\/larry-kendalls-3-step-process-to-develop-a-compelling-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"Larry Kendall&#8217;s 3 step process to develop a compelling vision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Helen Keller was once asked if she could think of anything worse than being blind and deaf.&nbsp; \u201cYes,\u201d she said, \u201cbeing able to see but having no vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is your vision for your organization?&nbsp; Where do you want to be a year from now?&nbsp; Five years from now?&nbsp; Do your people have a vision?&nbsp; Do they share in your vision?&nbsp; It has been said \u201cWithout vision, the people will perish.\u201d&nbsp; And so will organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <em>&#8220;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/One-Thing-You-Need-Know\/dp\/0743261658\/ref=asc_df_0743261658\/?tag=hyprod-20&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=312111907622&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=5819495951210488527&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9011759&amp;hvtargid=pla-487346690347&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The One Thing You Need to Know,&#8221; Markus Buckingham <\/a>says the primary role of a leader is to \u201cclarify the future\u201d \u2014 to create and communicate a compelling vision.\u00a0How do we do that specifically?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we work with the top leadership of companies, we recommend a three-step process to develop a compelling, relevant vision that will inspire the organization to greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-expand-your-perceptual-map\">Step 1:\u00a0 Expand your perceptual map.\u00a0 <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your perceptual map is your world view. Do you have a big, expansive world view?\u00a0If you do, you will have more and better ideas for your vision. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been said that we are today the same as we will be tomorrow except for three things:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 \u2014 The people we meet. <strong>Tip:<\/strong> Get involved in a <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/peer-review-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer review group<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 \u2014 The places we go. Tip: Go <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/articles\/brokerage-benchmark-report-outperforming-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benchmark top companies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N3 \u2014 The books we read. Leaders are readers.\u00a0Set a goal to read the <strong>Wall Street Journal\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/jacklimpert.com\/2021\/12\/business-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top 10 best-selling business books<\/a> each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expand your perceptual map and you\u2019ll improve your vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Wave your magic wand.\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you could wave a magic wand and, when you walk into your office or company tomorrow, it is just the way you want it.\u00a0What would it look like?\u00a0When we ask this question in a leadership workshop, there are many ideas ranging from \u201ceverybody is positive and productive\u201d to \u201cour profits are off the chart.\u201d \u00a0Pick two or three of the best ones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3:\u00a0 Make your vision measurable.\u00a0 <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Put metrics to your magic wand answers.\u00a0You need to answer the question, \u201cHow will we know when we\u2019ve succeeded?\u201d\u00a0Rather than just visualizing productive sales associates, visualize an average GCI or the number of transactions per associate.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How about a specific profit or market share?\u00a0The gold standard for many companies is to be able to outperform the market, i.e. if the market is up 15%, we want to exceed that.\u00a0 Outperforming the market always increases market share.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great vision statement should be bold, measurable and written down.\u00a0As a leader, you are responsible for the vision, for clarifying the future, and for taking your company from vision to shared vision (which we\u2019ll cover next time).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the grand opening of <strong>Disney World<\/strong>, Roy Disney was the CEO of Disney as Walt had died several years earlier.\u00a0 A reported commented to Roy, \u201cThis place is so incredible!\u00a0 It\u2019s just too bad Walt isn\u2019t here to see it.\u201d\u00a0 Roy Disney replied, \u201cOh, Walt saw it alright.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it is here.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ninja Selling&#8217;s three-step process to develop a compelling, relevant vision that will drive your real estate business forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15802,"featured_media":4822,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3255],"tags":[],"coauthors":[54],"class_list":["post-3490","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-archive"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.4 (Yoast SEO v26.8) -
