{"id":3289,"date":"2022-07-06T02:21:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T02:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/06\/anti-brokerage-brokerage-homelister-raises-10m\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:44:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:44:32","slug":"anti-brokerage-brokerage-homelister-raises-10m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/06\/anti-brokerage-brokerage-homelister-raises-10m\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-brokerage brokerage HomeLister raises $10M"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It&#8217;s a difficult time for many companies vying to disrupt real estate: In the past week alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/articles\/homelight-lays-off-19-of-workforce\/\">three different companies<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/articles\/sundae-lays-off-15-of-employees\/\">alternative-to-traditional brokerage models<\/a> \u2013 <strong>HomeLight<\/strong>, <strong>Sundae<\/strong> and <strong>Orchard<\/strong> \u2013 announced layoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, at least one such company is touting near-term growth. Last week, <strong>HomeLister<\/strong>, a company based in Santa Monica, California, announced it raised $10 million in \u201cseries A\u201d funding from financiers <strong>M13<\/strong> and <strong>Homebrew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fund raise follows a year in which HomeLister said it represented the seller in about 3,800 deals in 2021, totaling $1.9 billion in home transactions. Lindsey McLean, Homelister\u2019s CEO and founder, and a former real estate developer and software engineer, believes her company can withstand the current economic downturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of those affected companies just have very different models,\u201d McLean said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HomeLister\u2019s model is a hybrid of the Multiple Listings Service-only brokerages that <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/articles\/the-special-lists-the-wild-volume-world-of-listing-only-agents\/\">dominated the top<\/a> of the <strong>RealTrends<\/strong>\u2019 1000 list \u2013 that is, brokerages whose main feature is having a licensed broker put the home on the MLS \u2013 and a remote brokerage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to <strong>ListWithFreedom.com<\/strong> or <strong>Homecoin.com<\/strong>, HomeLister has an escalating list of price packages similar to a car wash or gym membership. There\u2019s a basic plan for home sellers at $600, a premium at $1,700 and a platinum package for $3,000. And the basic plan is similar to ListWithFreedom\u2019s premium package, as it provides appointment scheduling through <strong>ShowingTime<\/strong> and the ability to conduct virtual tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As McLean noted, these flat fees can potentially save sellers thousands of dollars compared to a percentage commission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where HomerLister distinguishes itself is in its premium and platinum packages, which feature a \u201cnegotiator.\u201d An offer is made on the house, and the seller brings back it to HomeLister, whose negotiator then decides whether it is a good deal, or if a counteroffer should be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe let you know, \u2018This is what we think of it, and this is what we\u2019re seeing in relation to other homes in the area,\u2019\u201d McLean said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In-house licensed real estate agents who work on multiple deals at once perform the negotiations. McLean said HomeLister is able to connect its customers to an in-house agent in about, \u201c4 to 12 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company presently operates in 17 states, with agents licensed for each state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time will tell if HomeLister succeeds in providing an alternative to real estate agents, hits stumbling blocks that have befallen other such companies in the past couple of weeks, or some combination thereof.
