Namely, appraisers should no longer have to partake in a two-year apprentice program as part of their licensing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Francois Gregoire, an appraiser in St. Petersburg, Florida, and head of NAR\u2019s Real Property Valuation Committee, pointed specifically to the apprentice training requirement \u2013 no comparable requirement exists for real estate agents \u2013 as the reason no one is joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/sizing-up-claims-of-appraisers-racial-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depleted profession<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/appraisers-give-hud-an-earful-during-bias-roundtable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the crosshairs<\/a> for allegedly racially biased appraisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gregoire also said his committee is \u201cactively working\u201d with the <strong>NAACP<\/strong> and <strong>Urban Institute<\/strong> to address biased appraisals that widen the home valuation gap. The longtime appraiser seeks buy-in from the <strong>Appraisal Foundation<\/strong>, the Washington D.C. group <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/podcast\/jonathan-miller-on-challenges-facing-the-appraisal-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federally empowered<\/a> to administer national appraisal standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gregoire\u2019s pointed suggestion came amid a Friday at NAR\u2019s annual conference that took on racism in real estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting, physically and virtually, of hundreds of thousands of real estate agents, is an almost overwhelming affair. Taking place in the cavernous San Diego convention center and sprawled out to an adjoining hotel, the conference jams together <a href=\"https:\/\/conference.realtor\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">200 sessions total<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topics range from the overlap of blockchain and real estate to mental wellness for real estate professionals. Sessions on matters like \u201cFederal issues in real estate\u201d (more on that shortly) were standing room only affairs, and lines snaked yards for use of convention center escalators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, NAR President Charlie Oppler perhaps set the tone in remarks Friday morning focused upon the racial home ownership gap. White home ownership in the U.S. is about 70%, <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.housingwire.com\/articles\/why-there-are-so-few-real-estate-agents-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> <strong>U.S. Census Bureau<\/strong> figures, while the Black homeownership rate is 44% and the Hispanic rate 49%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trade group leader, who is also president of a <strong>Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/strong> franchise in New Jersey, noted that last year NAR apologized for the first time in \u201ccreating systemic housing discrimination\u201d through the decades-long support of real estate and lending practices such as redlining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were wrong,\u201d Oppler said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to move forward and do things and we are doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is NAR doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This article was originally published by HousingWire.
