As the debate intensified, I wondered how they would handle the conflict.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were magnificent!&nbsp;They debated but never argued.&nbsp;They made their points and questioned each other\u2019s points but were always respectful.&nbsp;Clearly, they trusted each other, and both wanted what was best for the organization.&nbsp;They just disagreed on how to get there. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, they brought out the best in each other\u2019s ideas and developed a winning strategy that was better than either one created on their own.&nbsp;These two leaders were masters in the art of productive conflict.&nbsp;Their ability to master conflict is probably one of the reasons their company is so successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid the fight<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What is productive conflict and how do you achieve it?&nbsp;How do you avoid it turning into a fight with hurt feelings? Productive conflict is defined as \u201can open exchange of conflicting or differing ideas in which parties feel equally heard.\u201d&nbsp;Productive <a href=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/patrick-lencioni-5-dysfunctions-of-a-virtual-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conflict creates opportunities<\/a> to innovate and find the best solution.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five key elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Trust.<\/strong>&nbsp;When trust is present, teams engage in unfiltered ideological debate.&nbsp;When trust is lacking, teams revert to \u201cGroup Think\u201d (agreeing with the dominant leader) or \u201cGossip\u201d (discussions outside of team meetings).&nbsp;The environment of trust is set by the team leader.<\/li><li><strong>Competence.<\/strong>&nbsp;Trust is enhanced when team members feel confident in each other\u2019s abilities.&nbsp;No one thinks they are the smartest person in the room.&nbsp;\u201cTogether we are smarter\u201d is the mindset.&nbsp;They feel each member has a valid contribution and they really listen to each other.<\/li><li><strong>Alignment.<\/strong>&nbsp; Members are clear on and aligned around common goals and mission. They start with common ground and identify levels of agreement.<\/li><li><strong>Caring.<\/strong>&nbsp;They care about the company and each other.&nbsp;They want what\u2019s best for the organization.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Civility.<\/strong>&nbsp;Productive conflict focuses on the issues and never degenerates into personal attacks or arguing.&nbsp;Negative observations are often reframed into positive action items.&nbsp;\u201cThis was bad\u201d is reframed into \u201cHow could we improve this?,\u201d or \u201cWhat if we tried this?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-productive-conflict\"><strong>Creating productive conflict&nbsp; <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It often helps if the leader takes the lead in creating a structured environment for <a href=\"https:\/\/ninjaselling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">productive conflict<\/a>.&nbsp; One of the best examples I\u2019ve seen was at a company where I was invited to consult.&nbsp;The company was facing a major decision on whether to expand internationally and the leadership team was divided on the issue.&nbsp; The CEO structured the meeting so that the advocate for expansion made a presentation on the \u201cwhy\u201d (benefits) of expansion.&nbsp;The team was encouraged to ask questions.&nbsp;There were a few questions but not enough for a lively debate in the opinion of the CEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the CEO did next was brilliant.&nbsp;He designated the biggest critic of the expansion to be the advocate and to make the presentation again.&nbsp;He then designated the advocate to be the critic and lead the team in critical questioning.&nbsp;This switch in roles loosened up the team and they felt more confident to ask better questions, challenge the presentation, and innovate to find the best solution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the entire team fully engaged, they were able to discover not only \u201cwhy\u201d they should expand, but more importantly \u201chow\u201d they should do it.&nbsp;They now operate successfully in six countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mastering productive conflict is one of the keys to team success and a key skill for leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Productive conflict creates opportunities to innovate and find the best solution.\u00a0 Here are five key elements necessary for productive conflict.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15802,"featured_media":4822,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3255],"tags":[],"coauthors":[54],"class_list":["post-2484","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-archive"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.4 (Yoast SEO v26.8) -
