{"id":1865,"date":"2018-07-09T16:33:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T16:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/09\/americans-stay-put-moving-stress\/"},"modified":"2025-03-13T02:32:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T02:32:44","slug":"americans-stay-put-moving-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/09\/americans-stay-put-moving-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Thirds of Americans Stay In Current Home Due To Moving Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Two-Thirds of Americans Say They Would Likely Move If It Wasn\u2019t Such a Hassle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The month of May marks the official start of moving season, the timeframe between Memorial Day and Labor Day when many Americans make the decision to pack their belongings and move to a new home. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparefoot.com\/\">SpareFoot<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest online self-storage marketplace, surveyed Americans to gain deeper insights into how and why they are moving, and found that while 46 percent of consumers have either recently moved or plan to move in the next year, even more, say they would choose to move if it was easier and less stressful. In fact, two-thirds (67 percent) reported that they would definitely or probably move if it wasn\u2019t such a hassle.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of more than 1,000 American adults conducted by SpareFoot found that the hassles of moving have left 66 percent of people feeling stuck in a home they didn\u2019t like, and 49 percent have stayed with a bad roommate just to avoid the process of moving. However, <a href=\"rising-rents\/\">millennials and Gen Z <\/a>are less likely to be deterred, with nearly a third (32 percent) reporting they have moved in the past year compared to just 15 percent of the general population.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-47830 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/preprod.realtrends.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/01\/AdobeStock_51337999-1-1024x761-1.jpeg\" alt=\"moving stress\" width=\"1024\" height=\"761\"><\/p>\n<p>The top reasons why people say they have moved are varied, with 37 percent moving for more affordable housing, 28 percent for a job, 19 percent escaping an unpleasant neighbor, and 13 percent to find a better living situation for their pet. No matter the reason, a majority of people shared that the best part of moving is having a fresh clean space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know moving is stressful and many people actively avoid it \u2013 <em><strong>39 percent claim to have misled a friend to avoid helping them move,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> said Alexander Harris, editor at SpareFoot. \u201cSpareFoot looks to alleviate as much stress as possible \u2013 whether you need to find a storage unit, a moving truck or moving supplies; or need tips on relocating to a big city, small suburb or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparefoot.com\/moving\/\">another popular destination<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2015\/cb15-47.html\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>, an estimated 35.7 million Americans move every year. Planning ahead and getting an early start is important, yet over half of people (53 percent) begin packing the same month they move.
